About Metal Foams

Unique Properties

Metal foams have interested engineers worldwide for decades because of their incomparable combination of attributes:

high specific surface area;

lightness (material is composed of about 90% of air);

resistance to harsh environments (high temperatures, corrosion & humidity depending on metals and ceramics used);

stiffness;

good impact energy absorption;

great noise attenuation;

recyclable;

innovative look.

Despite having benefits for a very large number of industrial applications, conventional metal foams are still confined to niche markets. In fact, existing production processes are inadequate for mass commercialization since they are plagued by excessive costs and various quality constraints.

Metafoam Advantages

Metafoam does not have to deal with the same technical restrictions because its exclusive production process was essentially developed to avoid compromises like these. For instance, it enables the company to produce the most affordable metal foam solutions on the market by lowering the expenses directed toward energy consumption, equipment, and raw materials.

Metafoam also has a greater control on the final properties of its metal foam's microstructure, therefore leading to more repeatability, increased homogeneity, and to the development of "Materials by Design". In other words, Metafoam can optimize its copper foams, copper-silver foams, iron foams, and nickel foams for your specific applications.

Also, because of its microstructure, composed of cells interconnected by micro-openings called windows, Metafoam material have up to 100 times more specific surface area (up to 100,000 m²/m³) than typical metallic foams. This represents an undeniable advantage since it has a direct impact on performance, especially when an exchange phenomenon is occurring.
