Unique Production Process
Located in the Montreal area, Metafoam is developing and manufacturing open-cell metal foams with an exclusive and distinctive production process.
Metafoam's basic technology comes from a discovery made at the Industrial Materials Institute (IMI) of the National Research Council of Canada (NRC). In 2001, IMI-NRC developed a new metal foam production process which alleviates the constraints of conventional processes. In sum, the IMI-NRC process leads to the highest specific surface area in the metal foam industry thanks to the unique microstructure of this material. Since then, Metafoam signed an exclusive license to commercialize this disruptive innovation and has filled its own patent applications for various products and for technologies which improve the manufacturing process, bonding and the mechanical properties of the foams.
Targeted Applications
With the unique properties of this multifunctional material, Metafoam can solve some of the most critical problems in numerous industries. Nevertheless, Metafoam is focusing for the moment on the development of high performance metal foams for value added applications including in thermal management, namely vapor chambers, heat pipes, and boiling surfaces, and in electrochemistry.
In that regard, Metafoam is looking to enter into partnerships with leading companies to co-develop high performance solutions and integrate its materials into existing products.
