Introduction

Metal foams have interested engineers worldwide for decades because of their incomparable combination of attributes:
  • high specific surface area
  • lightness (material is composed of about 90% air)
  • resistance to harsh environments (high temperatures, corrosion & humidity depending on metals and ceramics used)
  • stiffness
  • good impact energy absorption
  • great noise attenuation
  • recyclable
Despite having benefits for a very large number of industrial applications, conventional metal foams are still confined to niche markets. In fact, existing production processes are inadequate for mass commercialization since they are plagued by excessive costs and various quality constraints.

Metafoam's Technology
Metafoam optimizes its copper foam properties for specific applications. Due to its exclusive production processes, Metafoam has a refined control on the final properties of its metal foam's microstructures, therefore leading to the development of "Materials by Design."

Because of this microstructure, composed of cells interconnected by micro-openings called windows, Metafoam's products have up to 100 times more specific surface area (20,000 m²/m³ on average) than typical metallic foams. This represents more than 3 football fields of surface in a single cubic meter. It offers a proven advantage since it has a direct impact on performance, especially during the heat exchange process.
